Utah attorney elected to American Intellectual Property Assn. board
Jonathan W. Richards, a senior shareholder and director of the Salt Lake City-based intellectual property law firm Workman Nydegger, has been nominated to serve as Secretary of the American Intellectual Property Association (AIPLA). He’ll begin serving his one-year term as an officer of the Association in October.
Mr. Richards, who was honored with the AIPLA 2007 Project Award last fall, has had a long association with AIPLA. He served on the AIPLA Trademark Treaties and International Law Committee from 2003 to 2007 (including service as the committee’s chair from 2005 to 2007 and vice chair from 2003 to 2005).
Mr. Richards has also represented AIPLA in matters all around the world. He was central to AIPLA’s work in reviewing a new trademark statute drafted and proposed by the People’s Republic of China last year. He previously represented AIPLA in meetings of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, and worked through AIPLA at a diplomatic conference in Singapore, which culminated in “The Singapore Treaty on the Law of Trademarks.”
“My association with AIPLA continues to present wonderful, satisfying opportunities,” Mr. Richards said. “I’m honored to serve in yet another capacity.”
With Workman Nydegger, Mr. Richards’ practice focuses on patent and trademark law matters, assisting clients in obtaining, maintaining and enforcing protection of their inventions and trade identities. Mr. Richards has also served for many years as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the J. Rueben Clark Law School at BYU.
With about 80 attorneys, Workman Nydegger has earned recognition as one of the top intellectual property firms in the nation. The firm represents a wide array of clients in all areas of intellectual property law, including patent, trademark, copyright, unfair competition and related litigation and licensing matters.
